Training to Teach

We are proud to work in partnership with London Metropolitan University to offer high quality Initial Teacher Education.

London Met has been training teachers since its earliest foundation in the Nineteenth Century; the university has a very strong mission to develop Social Justice and to widen participation in Higher Education. The ITE Department is committed to building equal representation in the teacher workforce and in doing so to support all our diverse communities across London and beyond.

The university offers three main routes into teaching of which, we offer:

1.      The traditional PGCE route, leading to QTS plus PGCE (Qualified Teacher Status plus Postgraduate Certificate in Education, an academic qualification at Master’s Level).

This route (often called the ‘core route’) gives trainees a strong grounding in educational practices through ‘front-loaded’ university training sessions, combined with 120 days in school, across two placements.

2.      School Direct, non-salaried route. This route is very similar to the traditional PGCE, leading to the same outcomes. The main difference is that you will be given placements within a Teaching School Alliance / federation of schools. Often the Lead School will offer extra contextual training as a part of the package.

3.      The Graduate Teacher Apprenticeship. This is an employment-based route, suitable for those who have strong prior experience of working in schools. Apprentices are paid on the Unqualified Teacher scale and the training is paid for through the Apprenticeship Levy, which all employers pay into.

Apprentices work in the employer school all year, but are ‘released’ for off-the-job training (20% of the timetable) and to undergo a second school experience, normally for 6 weeks.

London Met offer the following subjects at Secondary (11-16) Level:

  • Secondary Biology
  • Secondary Chemistry
