Special Educational Needs

At Cardinal Pole we are committed to meeting the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and strive to ensure that all pupils have access to as full and balanced a curriculum as possible. We provide support to students with a range of Special Educational Needs (SEN), English as an Additional Language (EAL) and students with a disability. We aim to promote the opportunities and achievements of all in line with our whole school ethos. Liaison with staff and knowing our students is essential and with this in mind we meet the students before they join Cardinal Pole in order to facilitate a successful transition to Secondary School.

Our Department is made up of 12 members of staff including 10 Teaching Assistants, 1 Specialised SEN Teacher, EAL Coordinator, that are highly qualified and dedicated to support all learners regardless of their needs to succeed and reach their full potential.

Identifying Students’ Needs

Information from students, parents, primary schools and teachers help us to decide on the level of support needed. A range of assessment materials including Cognitive Ability Tests (CATs) and standardised reading tests alongside with other screenings are used effectively to implement interventions.

Delivering Support

Regular planning and review meetings are organised to ensure that intervention strategies and support are provided to meet individual pupil needs. In addition to regular lessons some pupils will have extra support, which may include:

  • Learning Mentoring
  • Teaching Assistant in class, small group or one to one
  • Outside agency specialists which include; Speech and Language Therapist, Educational                       Psychologist, Counsellor, Youth Workers and Community Workers.

The SEND Department is headed up by a full-time SENCo, a Deputy SENCo and supported by one full time SEND Teacher, Teaching Assistants, an Inclusion Manager and three Learning Mentors.

Exam Support

Students are assessed at the end of Year 9 to see if they meet the strict criteria for access arrangements. Applications are then made to the Examining Boards and students are informed by letter if their applications are successful.

Extra-curricular Activities

Breakfast and lunch clubs provide times for socialising and accessing extra support. Homework and revision clubs enable students to gain the additional support needed to succeed further.
