Special Educational Needs
At Cardinal Pole we are committed to meeting the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs ( SEN ) and aim to ensure that all pupils have access to as full and balanced a curriculum as possible.
The SEN department, working in close collaboration with outside agencies, caters for the following categories of SEN:
- moderate learning difficulty (MLD)
- specific learning difficulty (SpLD)
- speech, language and communication needs (SLCN)
- behaviour, emotional and social difficulty (BESD)
Pupils with mild hearing loss, minor eyesight difficulties, medical conditions such as sickle cell or a physical disability are also catered for.
Regular planning and review meetings are organised to ensure that intervention strategies and support are provided to meet individual pupil needs. In addition to regular lessons some pupils will have additional input, which may include support from:
- a Learning Mentor
- a Learning Support Assistant in class, in a group, 1:1 or in withdrawal
- a SEN Specialist Teacher in class, in a small group, 1:1 or in withdrawal
- an external specialist e.g. Speech Therapist, Educational Psychologist
The SEN Department is headed up by a full-time SENCO, a deputy SENCO and supported by three full time SEN Teachers, nine Learning Support Assistants, Pupil Inclusion Manager and three Learning Mentors
Both the Upper and Lower school have dedicated SEN facilities which accommodate both one to one supervision and small group teaching.
