Curriculum

At Cardinal Pole Catholic School, we offer a broad and balanced curriculum. In addition to the core and Ebacc subjects, students study subjects around enterprise, the creative and expressive arts, allied with our extensive co-curricular offer. Our curriculum is designed to develop students to reach their full potential, academically spiritually, culturally and morally.

In response to recent national curriculum changes, year 7 students are the first cohort to follow a five year curriculum focusing on mastery learning. Year 8 students follow a four year curriculum whist year 9 study their GCSE courses over three years.

All students are prepared for academic success at GCSE, post 16 and beyond.

All students, in years 7 to 11, have thirty lessons every week, each lasting fifty minutes and an additional 5 periods for prep and co-curricular activities.

Year 7 and 8 students are taught the KS3 curriculum and aspects of the KS4 curriculum in order to promote fluency and mastery. Year 7 and year 8 students are grouped according to ability and have a choice between French and Spanish. They are taught two periods of Art and Technology on alternate weeks.

At the end of year 8, students make option choices and start GCSE courses in year 9.

In addition to their three options, students in years 9 to 11 study the core subjects: English, Maths, Science, Religious Studies and Physical Education.

Our outstanding sixth form offers a range of A Level and vocational subjects, meeting the needs of all learners. Students typically choose four subjects in year 12, then drop down to three subjects in year 13. Each A level subject is allocated 6 periods weekly whilst vocation subjects are allocated 15 periods each week.
