27th March 2010

Rhasan Bruner filming the DCSF Dipoloma trailer

The Department for Children & Families (DCSF) recently shot their new promotional advert for the 14-19 Diploma at Cardinal Pole School. As a leading school in the reform Cardinal Pole students were treated to a full-day of high-tech media shooting where their classroom was transformed into a studio complete with cameras on tracks and light filters. Year 10 pupil Rhasan Bruner is the star of the promotion. When Rhasan started at the school he was very shy but studying the Higher Diploma in Society, Health & Development has increased his confidence so much that the DCSF asked to use him in their new shoot. Fellow Diploma classmates were also involved in the shoot and BTEC Art students were able to discuss with the cameramen about the best way into film and television production Teacher Laura McInerney said, “The shoot took 13-hours and the students were remarkably patient and well-mannered. The crew were quite astounded by their maturity. Many people have misconception about the Diploma but we find the students are independent learners who are constantly in challenging situations like this one, I am so proud of their progress.”. The DSCF Video is aimed at raising the profile of the new Higher Diploma qualification worth 7 GCSEs. The Diploma incorporates academic work with practical skills, teamwork, independent projects and functional skills in Maths, English & ICT to ensure all students have a range of skills suitable for employment.

Performance of the Holocaust play: And they came for me

27th March 2010

Year 9's watch a Holocaust play about the life of Anne Frank

Year 9 pupils watched a multi-media performance of documentary drama about the life of Anne Frank, interweaving photographs and video interviews with her friend Eva Schloss, whose book inspired the play, and Anne’s first boyfriend, Ed Silverberg. The play also incorporates a team of four actors performing a live re-enactment of the events. The performance, which has come to the school for the 3rd time, was performed by Blue Sky Network, who have also performed the play across Europe and America, in Parliament and at City Hall. The performance complements work the students have been undertaking in History, Drama, RE and Citizenship. The Aim of the Event was to engage the pupils in developing personal and independent responses to important issues, as part of their global citizenship programme.

‘The pupils were highly engaged by the performance, which gave a very powerful and emotional message about the evils of hate crime. This message was backed up forcibly by Director Nick Careem, in a thought-provoking discussion with the cast and pupils.’ ‘Nick was impressed by the level of questioning which the students provided after the show, praising them for their mature response to the issues.’

Christmas Fair 2009

2nd Decemeber 09

Christmas Fair 2009

The 2009 Business and Enterprise Xmas Fair was held on Wednesday 2nd December. This event was organised to showcase BTEC Business Year 10 student’s enterprise skills. Forty-four budding entrepreneurs spent time inside and outside the classroom honing their skills since early October. Students had to demonstrate team work from the start, organising themselves into groups and brainstorming business ideas. Some excellent ideas were produced by these young people, and eventually it narrowed down to the chosen few. Each group conducted market research and depending on the success of the results, prototypes and plans were put into action.

When each team analysed their start up costs and produced a business plan, they raised their capital by many various means. Some chose to fund their venture themselves while others presented their plan to school staff and convinced ‘dragons’to invest in their businesses.  Meetings were held on a regular basis to review progress; advice was sought and received from a range of sources.

A lot of time and effort was pumped into their businesses by the students.  Their work was rewarded by acquiring and developing some enterprise skills such as team work, innovation, communication, financial capability, negotiation and time management  to name but a few.

The day itself was an outstanding success - ‘the best yet’ was the general consciences from the adults who attended the fair. The businesses sold goods, provided services and took orders from an assortment of clientel. The students involved excelled in their preparation of their stalls, ‘selling’ techniques and overall desire to make their business a success.  All the participants, students and staff left the Sixth Form Common Room with smiles on their faces, grateful for the opportunity to experience the Xmas Fair.  Students on each side of the counter benefited greatly from peer learning, learning from their mistakes and having fun!

We would like to congratulate each student who contributed to the Fair on their excellent behaviour, patience and involvement during the lead up to and during the Xmas Fair.

Well done everyone.
