The London Youth Games feeder event is a development competition for London Borough Clubs which leads into the London Youth Games structure.
A big thanks to Gabor Szanyi-Nagy is the head coach at CP/CLJC who continues to do a wonderful job with our pupils and others locally preparing them for competition. The support of British Judo and Arsenal has also been a key factor. Hopefully the club will continue to develop when we move into our morning lane premises in 2012.
Inspire! delivers workshops at Cardinal Pole
Cardinal Pole Catholic School took on an Olympic-themed enterprise challenge in November. The programme for Year 8 students, which was designed and organised by Inspire! – the Education Business Partnership for Hackney, aimed to develop students’ work-related skills and increase their awareness of the impact the Games will have on the borough.
The day started with an assembly led by Tony Medawar from the London Development Agency, which introduced the students to the challenge and outlined the ways in which the Olympics will affect Hackney.
After taking part in activities which introduced them to the Olympic and Paralympic values, students were asked to create a promotional campaign based on one of the values to attract visitors to Hackney both during and after the Olympic Games. Assisting them were volunteers from KPMG, Kraft, the Department for Work & Pensions, Aberdeen Asset Management and a volunteer from the council’s Hackney Hosts programme. Students worked in teams to produce their campaigns, taking on different job roles and producing a logo, slogan, mascot and designs for merchandise, as well as a marketing and business plan.
As with any real life business scenario, teams had to make a late decision when news came through that David Beckham would be available to put in a personal appearance. Groups had to decide whether or not they could afford to take up the option by sacrificing an aspect of their campaign and if so, how they would use him. ‘We’re going to get David Beckham to play a match of blind football to promote equality,’ said Desi Adboshun (13).
The day concluded with each team presenting their ideas to a panel of volunteer judges, and the winning teams won the chance to visit the Olympic Park next month. Inspire!, as part of their work around the 2012 games are offering these workshops to interested schools.
